Hey guys, I just got done tinkering on an old mac I had laying around and I'm gonna make you guys a guide. The short answer is that, yes, you must run it from the terminal. But you need to put it in its own folder cause it will spawn a lot of other files when you run it and you don't want all that in your downloads folder.

Like I said, working on a guide now, shouldn't take long.

Running mine4erf is pretty non-obvious if you're used to doing things The Mac Way. Here's what you need to know:

First off, you need to know how to launch Mac's terminal app. Open Finder, open the "Applications" folder, then the "Utilities" folder. In Utilities, you will find the "terminal" app. Double-click the terminal app to open it. You should get a prompt that looks a bit like this (taken from a Linux box of mine):

    Image

Anyone familiar with the Linux or BSD terminal will feel right at home in the Mac terminal. Mac has a somewhat BSDish environment you can use via the terminal app with Bash as the shell.

First, make sure you are in your home folder. At the $ prompt type and hit return:

    cd ~

Then create a new directory to hold mine4erf:

    mkdir erfminer

At this point, if you use an Anti Virus product you may need to create an exception (or two) for this new folder. I previously made several guides for doing this on Windows, but the actual creating the exceptions part of those videos should be the same for Mac. In finder the folder we just created is "<computer name>/Users/<your username>/erfminer."

If you have the AV taken care of, or you don't have an AV we can continue. Download the Mac Mine4Erf app if you don't already have it.

Most likely you won't be asked where to save it. You'll need to move it from your downloads folder to the new mine4erf folder. Back on the terminal type (case sensitive):

    mv Downloads/mine4erf erfminer/

now you simply change to the mine4erf folder:

    cd erfminer/

And make the mine4erf binary executable:

    chmod u+x mine4erf

Now you can run it by simply typing:

    ./mine4erf

At this point, Mine4Erf will launch and download the other files it needs, ask for your Erfworld username, scan your Mac's capabilities, and (hopefully) begin mining. If you have further problems report back here and I'll help you sort them out best I can.

Oh, and next time you want to run mine4erf, open the terminal just do:

    cd ~/erfminer
    ./mine4erf

    Extra Notes

    Nvidia Quadro, Geforce, and CUDA:
    Spoiler: show
Nvidia GeForce and Quadro owners may see a performance boost by installing Nvidia's Cuda drivers. You can install them from Apple by going to System Preferences > Other > CUDA, then 'Install CUDA Update'.

Nvidia users can also get the very latest drivers (sometimes newer than those provided by Apple) by going to the Nvidia driver page. You actually have to select the Quadro line of graphics cards (even if you have a Geforce) then select a "Quadro XXXX for mac" from the products. Then select your exact version of Mac OS. When you find the correct Quadro/Geforce drivers check the description below the download links and you should see where it says "In order to run Mac OS X Applications that leverage the CUDA architecture of certain NVIDIA graphics cards..." it should contain a link to the matching CUDA drivers as well.

A gig and a half of swap space pushed out immediately. The system going exceedingly nonresponsive. And the window server itself throwing excessive wake-up's.

The bad responsiveness was not just a temporary; it continued. I hit control-Z.

    Code:
    keybounceMBP:mine4 michael$ ./mine4erf
    Running the latest version!

    Enter Erfworld username:
    keybounce

The main mine4erf miner can't run on your hardware, but our secondary miner will!
It generates a spin every two hours rather than every hour, but still contributes and finds gems almost as well!

    Press Enter to continue...

First question: how do I control which graphic card it uses?

Second question: it is throwing a warning or error message; is this actually a problem?

Third question: is there a way to reduce the amount of work it is doing? Right now it brings my system to its knees, yet activity monitor does not show any high CPU process.

Fourth question: it seems to be downloading a lot of jobs all at once. Can the job rate be toned down a little?

Fifth question: is it possible to put half of the jobs on the internal GPU, and half of the jobs on the external card?

Uhm.... hmm. That's... interesting. It really shouldn't use enough system memory to mess with swap space. It's using 1.4 megabytes of ram on Windows. It should be using a lot of video memory which... I don't think is paged on Mac? It sure isn't on any other OS I'm familiar with. Would be really odd for video memory to be paged.

This is not expected behavior, afaik.

You see where it says "Starting with parameters:"? What follows is what determines the rest. It's mining Ubiq coins (--ubiq), using OpenCL (-G), using platform 0 (--opencl-platform 0), and using video adapter 1 (--opencl-devices 1).

In your case, all your video adapters are on platform 0. Your geforce is device 1. You can tell by this line:

    OpenCL Card 0:1 - GeForce GT 750M [VRAM: 2147483648]

Those bolded numbers are the platform number and device number respectively.

To change this you would create a plain text file named "hardware-detect-override.txt" in the same folder as the mine4erf binary and put a single line at the top of the file: "--ubiq -G --opencl-platform 0 --opencl-devices 0" (without the quotes, obviously). This will switch it to your Iris Pro adapter (which I believe is an Intel integrated adapter in the CPU, and are not known to work). Actually, kinda looks like you are using the Iris Pro in spite of the configuration flags. See Below.

I would normally say no. But somehow this sucker is eating up huge amounts of ram that it shouldn't be. That bit of code is, generally, considered a programming bad-practice by developers. Strictly speaking, it's possible for it to work without a problem. It's also possible for it to cause a memory leak. I'll investigate the known issues with ethminer in a bit... see if this is known and what the devs have to say about it.

I will say another erfworlder already reported that error but said the miner seems to work fine otherwise.

I do not believe so. This is a much-requested feature but, afaik, the underlying miner that mine4erf downloads and runs is designed to just go as fast as it possibly can. If there is a way to adjust ethminer to run slower, I don't know it.

Hah, you should see my output. I get two-three new jobs for every four speed lines. No, that's actually perfectly normal. And no, I do not know a way to alter the job queue rate.

    keybounce wrote:
Fifth question: is it possible to put half of the jobs on the internal GPU, and half of the jobs on the external card?

Yes. In theory. Same as specifying a different adapter to use but instead of putting "--opencl-devices 0" you would put "--opencl-devices 0 1" just like that. ADDENDUM: It should be noted that this won't use half as much GPU power as using one device. Rather it will _add_ the full GPU power of the additional device to the full GPU power of that existing device. And, given the huge mis-match in performance capabilities between your IGP and DGP it won't be half on each. If you are having issues with sluggishness in other apps now, doing this would only make them worse.

One additional note. You have a GeForce but for some reason the mine4erf binary is selecting OpenCL for you. It may be detecting that your system is not fully set up for CUDA. I'll be honest, my experience with Mac is somewhat limited. But I can tell you that GeForce cards perform better when using CUDA. I can also tell you that setting up CUDA requires extra steps on linux... so it very well might take additional steps on Mac too. I'll research this.

Sorry keybounce, dunno how I missed this before... but it looks like ethminer is ignoring the "--opencl-devices 1" and using the Iris Pro gpu anyway. You can try tinkering with the --opencl-devices flag a bit and see if you can make it switch but I think there may be an issue with your GeForce/CUDA configuration (outdated drivers are a possible issue.).

This would make a lot of sense out of your symptoms. The Iris Pro is going to use system memory for its video memory. On a PC the amount of system memory given to the IGP would be a set number, but if it's auto-adjusted on Mac then it could be eating up a lot of ram for video memory and forcing Mac to swap out stuff from system memory.

Getting it working with the GeForce would solve most of your problems, I believe.

Keybounce, can you follow this guide for me and maybe toss a screenshot in here of the output?

Also, what version of Mac OS are you on?

After going over the logs I think it is correctly only mining on the dedicated graphics, but some macOS devices of the nVidia 7xx generation and older at least seem to have really bad performance while mining.

If you feel like doing some experimenting, it might be worth trying to install macOS CUDA support, via System Preferences > Other > CUDA, then 'Install CUDA Update', and seeing if the miner does better while running with CUDA.

That said, the hash rate is pretty low on this system so you might not find a setup which is worth it to you to run. If I work out any better tuning settings for macOS I'll try to incorporate them and include a note about that in the release thread, though.

Well, in my case Mine4Erf didn't work because I have an unsupported graphics card (Intel(R) Iris(TM) Graphics 650). I hope in some future it can run in that card.

So let's see if a reboot made it work better

Yes, you have to get the Cuda driver that matches your installed geforce driver, or at least that's my understanding. You can try doing the CUDA update as JBeshir suggested or you can download them from Nvidia (see below). But from what i've been reading Apple's CUDA update tool can sometimes fail to find a matching CUDA driver despite Nvidia having released one.

From the Nvidia driver page you actually have to select the Quadro line of graphics cards then select a "Quadro for mac" from the products. Then select your exact version of Mac OS (Mavericks 10.9.5 in this case). That leads to this Geforce driver (334.01.03f11 vs the older 310.40.55f01 you have now) and this CUDA driver (387.178, same as what you linked).

If you could install those and get back to me, let me know if it helped.

(first, I had a couple of edits that you missed)

That driver version states that it's for earlier hardware models, and lower numbered video cards.

    Anyways,

    Code:
    Starting with parameters: --ubiq -G --opencl-platform 0 --opencl-devices 1
You can override these parameters by adding a hardware-detect-override.txt file to the miner's folder.

Still makes my system very nonresponsive.
Oddly, I'm looking at 90% idle time, and Windows server is only using 4% CPU. No massive swap space used. This might be usable overnight, but it's not usable during the day. Definitely running my fans at full speed.

And this is my gripe with Mac. It's incredibly easy to use... Until you want to do anything that might qualify you as a "power user"

And yeah you were only up to edit 2 when I replied.

So yeah I'm kinda at the end of my ideas here. Might simply be a case of poor hardware support for 3d graphics. Linux has the same problem, but worse.

The only thing else I can think to try is forcing the miner to try CUDA. For that replace -G with -U and --opencl-* with --cuda-*. But if CUDA is still not working on your system then I expect that to give an error and exit.
