Look closer at yellow spot in water to see what it is. Do we think we can swim?

If anything charges at us, we should sling a rock at it, then shank it.

If nothing charges at us, we should try talking to the gobwin, just to see if it helps. "Hello, I'm Monk Fyv. Who are you? Where is this?"

We should also try to tame and mount a snail. Not only will it serve as a ride, we can turn it into escargot if we get hungrey later.

All this.

    (no picture update)

Monk Fyv looks at the shiny spot in the water. There's something down there, glowing, ethereally. It is not clear what, however.

Fyv is pretty sure he can swim, but probably not that far. And you never know what else could be down there.

Nothing is charging towards him, so Monk calls out to the Gobwin. It doesn't seem to respond, but just keeps lurching around, occasionally growling. Or is it moaning? Weird.

Monk looks at the slimy creatures, and thinks seriously about riding one. How would he hold on? What if the creature bites him? Is it poisonous? Where would he sit? It doesn't seem to move very quickly.
He's not sure that's going to be a great mode of transportation.

    What now?

    Is it poisonous?

We should look more closely at the Gobwin. Did it respond in any way to us? (Did it start lurching more or become louder when we tried talking to it? Did it even look directly at us?) Is the gobwin wounded? Can we see bites marks? Can we see any slime on the gobwin's unprotected skin, or around its mouth? Does it appear to have drunk any of the water? (Does it appear to have gone for a recent swim?)

Are we wearing a good pair of shoes? We don't appear to have gloves or sleeves. We could go back and get the pants off the dead gobwins. If we tear the pants, we could make sleeves and rags to use as crude arm and hand protection.

Would it be possible for us to walk around the snails and their slime trail to get to the doors?

There also appears to be an inscription on the door we just passed thru. two actually. one on this side and one on the other. What do they say?

The Gobwin did not respond in any way towards the calling out, except by grunting, and that could have been coincidental.

It is not clear whether the Gobwin is wounded. Certainly there are no obvious gaping holes in the creature. There is no sign of bite marks, or slime. The creature appears dry.

Monk Fyv is wearing default Marbit shoes. The dead Gobwins were not wearing pants, or indeed clothes of any kind.

The snail seems pretty big. Might be hard to walk past.

Monk Fyv looks at the door, but cannot see any inscriptions [there aren't meant to be any there, and I'm sorry if it looks like there is].

Unless that gobwin is asleep, I think we can safely assume that it is tripping.

It may have been poisoned somehow. There are quite a large number of ways this is possible, and we need to determine which. (If the gobwin was driven mad by something it saw, then I'm afraid we we are going to lose the game horribly. My curiousity will be the end of us.)

Possibilities for the poison's source that spring to mind are one of the snails, the water, the cup we're holding (maybe all 3 of the gobwins we've seen have drunk from it), something on the rocks around us, or the air.

Does the air or water smell foul? Is there a layer of grime or fungus on the walls, floor, or ceiling?

Before we kicked it, did the first gobwin have any visible injuries?

I think our next move should be to sling a single rock at the gobwin. If it tries to attack us, it will have to go thru the water or the snail to do so.

If the snails are moving, wait until it is as far away from us a possible then sling a rock at it. Continue till it is close enough to use a sword on.

Something about the recent strips has sent me down memory lane, and reminded me that this game just kind of ended.

So, I'm just kind of un-ending it.

Monk Fyv slings a rock across at the Gobwin.

    Image

It has been a long time coming, and scores a direct hit.

    Image

The Gobwin, enraged, turns to charge at Monk Fyv...

    Image

And slips on the goo left behind by the giant snail.

    Image

And falls into the water, sinking below the surface with a great splash!

Did the snail slime on the Gobwin react with the water, or more importantly, with it until it fell in the water?

Also, fill Shiny Cup with water, but be careful not to get wet.

The only slime reaction appears to have been slipping.

Monk Fyv fills the cup with water. Nothing strange to report.

Approach nearest giant snail. If it acts hostile, throw the water at it.
If it doesn't act hostile, try to pet it. Maybe we can get a friend in this Gobwin-infested cave? (Make sure to keep our guard up, though - no guarantee its' not just waiting for us to get close before attacking)

If the thing in the water is still alive (moving around trying not to go under the water) sling it again. If not swim over to it to check for another blue gem.

I cannot indicate the ownership in such a manner? Very well...

Monk Fyv takes a sip of the water from the cup. It is cold, and not particularly pleasant, but it seems to do him no harm.

    {Anyone remember that old Space Quest adventure where the alien would kiss you in the first two minutes (apparently without effect), and then an hour later a baby alien would burst from your chest? Good times. Good times.}

    Image

Monk Fyv approaches the Giant Snail, reaching out to "pet" it (in Australia we never "pet" our pets, we only "pat" our pets - which is why the notion of "heavy petting" from US shows never made much sense to me).

The Snail rears up! Well, it raises its (not it's or its') eye stalks in a way that a Marbit finds confronting.

Monk Fyv immediately throws a cup of water over the snail!

The snail doesn't even seem to notice this aqueous assault, and continues moving forward, ever forward.

Monk Fyv then decides to sling a stone at the Gobwin in the water, which appears to be walking, very slowly, along the bottom of the pond.

"Ploink!" The stone misses (a half submerged head is a bit of a challenge to hit, after all).

Wouldn't you know it - I found this site, and now I feel terrible for my reproachful grammar. Sorry, Dave. :(

In other news, observe the snail: does it look angry, or just irritated? Does a Marbit even know what a berserk cave-snail looks like?

    Life is all about learning.

Monk Fyv cannot remember ever encountering a cave-snail before (indeed, his memory before all of these events is non-existent. Why is he here? What is life all about?).

He does not know if the cave snail is angry, or just bizarre looking.

It goes without saying that Monk Fyv is in a constant state of terror, and now that he has drunk some water, is in danger of wetting his pants.

Fair enough. Time to embrace the nature of the roguelike... Killing everything.

Take several steps back (say, 5 to start) and fire a rock at the snail, focusing on one of or both it's eyes. Be careful not to slip on anything slippery while backing up, and take at least a second to aim.
