Surely that's underestimating the sophistication of Shockmancy! I'm sure their sophistication gets underestimated very often, but if you are frequently putting a Shockmancer in combat as a human cannon then his life depends upon gaining insights into his discipline.

Well, I didn't mean that shockamancers are unsophisticated in general, I was trying to envision a situation where a caster would level a lot without gaining particular sophistication and thus not advancing in class. That was just the first possibility that came to mind. Do you have a different possibility you think is better? Or do you think that situation is fundamentally impossible?

I think that gaining levels for a caster is mostly about how much juice they use, like exercising a muscle. Casters who use juice in large quantities get more juice. Casters who think deeply about their discipline gain ranks. The two naturally go together because you can't think deeply without experiences to think about, but it's easy to have experience without thinking deeply. I expect that gaining ranks is not about how a caster is used; it's about who the caster is. An extraordinarily unthoughtful caster could probably reach level 11 while still being a novice, which I suppose would mean that he is very powerful and has plentiful juice, but has a limited range of capabilities and lacks subtlety.

It's also possible that levels and insights are linked.

Consider when Parson first arrived in Erfworld, and Stanley mentioned not having time to teach his new CW tactics or anything like that (don't remember the exact wording). Now, because Erfworld is turn based, they actually have quite alot of time (perhaps not infinite, but over the course of a few turns, certainly a few dozen hours to work with). But time may not be the dominant factor in an Erfworlder CW learning tactics. It may simply be level. As they level, they gain more insights into how combat works, how troops can be utilized, etc. The two are, essentially, interchangeable concepts. This is part of what takes everyone aback about Parson so much. He is very low level, but has strategies orders of magnitude beyond other commanders. So, Stanley didn't have 'time' to teach Parson, because he didn't have the turns and battles to level him.

Also remember when Syliva said "He is level 20. He is Level Thousand. He is Level Million. It does not matter." While she was primarily talking about him being an instrument of fate, it is also possible that she is talking about the disconnect between his level and his tactical ability. Ossmer had just basically said that Parson must be useless since he is so low level, so he was drawing a conclusion about his tactical ability based on his level.

Just think, maybe when you have that big 'aha' moment in some subject and suddenly understand it so much better. When it just 'clicks'. That's because you gained a level. Congrats.

I guess now we know what a CWL can do to a caster. They can fire them.

A few things stuck out at me. Tisha helped summon Parson, and is the premiere specialist when it comes to fixing mental injuries. If someone where to examine a Decrypted unit and study the effects of Decryption upon the mind, it would be her.

A.V. Club made the Laurel of Napster, and it lead to her side's downfall. The Laurel is now in the hands of Faq. Hmm. She'd be a fun person to link with Ace.

Different item, The Laurel was Date-a-mancy, and the item referenced there is Signamancy.

She could have been the thinkamancer in a trilink of Date and Sign that made the Laurel of Napster. Unless we have evidence I am forgetting about the laurel. Most of what I remember was that it was formed via trilink, and now we have evidence of who the Think was. Anyone have more references for the artifact?

The link to make the Laurel required a Hat Magician too. So we know Napster at least had the apparent average of 4 casters.

Unless the Hippiemancer advanced in magic sideways instead of vertically? But yeah, probably 4 casters.

Except a 4-way link is supposedly unheard of. So I'd say probably a high level Hippymancer who could cover signamancy and date-a-mancy.

I really don't think they are/ I'm willing to bet this is a small error. Duncan's Laurel was most likely made by A.V. Club through a link with a Hat Magician and a Date-a-mancer. I think the mention of it giving and intuition for signamancy is a mistake that should read date-a-mancy.

Well, we're in a forum with the creators of the comic. We should ask them and either a) alert them to a typo / errata in the book, or b) avoid a long and frustrating debate would be impossible to resolve anyway.

I'll go ahead and send Rob a PM! :D

Fair enough. 5 quatloo that the heargear Duncan wears is the same one mentioned in A.V. Club's write up.

Since I asked Rob (and have already sunk all my Q into one bet), I'll be an impartial messenger/observer (depending on whether Rob PMs me back or just posts here).
