The difference between Chaplin and this situation is that there was never any question that Chaplin was making fun of them.

Like I said earlier, the Internet is a breeding ground for people who think "Man, those Nazis sure were swell!" and I was just making sure this wasn't one of those cases.

Oh for fuck... there was never any question on anything until YOU started questioning things. QUIT QUESTIONING THINGS. I don't see you ruining any of Crisis' other threads.

Maybe relax a bit, Anomynous? I think it's fair that rstoffel was able to voice his concerns and have them responded to in a reasonable manner.

If we don't want to encourage actual awful behavior, it is important to always be willing to make clear that we do not condone it.

    Hear-hear.

So, next round of discussion: A specialized stack in the service of the Not-Z tribe. The Krazy Kapture Kommandos.

These storm troopers would be trying to wipe out all remnants of what used to be a republic, with elections, including an old guard of loyal knights.

I was kinda hoping that others would expand from what I wrote, but if I must go on:

Vegemight can be rather salty at times (and "slightly bitter"). His personality is rather divisive as he is a rather "Love him or hate him", to those that have met him. Those that have yet to meet him often under-estimate his saltiness, either inviting him for teas that last too long or giving him too many honours as a guest, causing them to be firmly in the camp of hating the guy.

If I were to describe his appearence, beyond his jetblack hair (and being as strong as he tastes), I'd say his size is comparable to a Marbit. Speaking of Marbits, there is a Marbit that looks and acts just like Vegemight named "Marmight", who is equally salty. I can't quite tell the difference between the two, but Prince Vegemight (or "his saltiness") doesn't approve of those that can't distinguish them. I'd say that the world is blessed by the fact that due to his height there isn't too much of him, but the fact that there is a second guy just like him sort of ruins the blessing.

When Vegemight is feeling especially cruel, he'll surgically insert a rose in every cheek he finds.

Did Vegemight marry Blooma? Well-developed girl with a very strong independent streak, only person known to have spoken up to him and live?

They would have the side-wide special of stack bonuses extending to nine units rather than the usual eight. So whenever they form up for battle, they chant "Nine! Nine! Nine!"

Their Chief Warlord, Literal Hitter, is a skinny bald guy who specializes in unarmed combat.

They have a real hate-on for Gobwins because they always win against their Forerun Twoll vanguard.

Emperor Nazi Goering (or "Me, Goering" as he is known to non-language speaking units). Built the Great Wall of Chinacountrytown (a city mostly populated by porcelain dolls) to "keep the rabbits out. Too many rabbits in Chinacountrytown".

The other thing that emperor is known for is a rice dish, still eaten in the Not-Z tribe today.

They also get a bonus when they have more than 1000 stacks (total) in a battle.

Yes, large numbers of weak units with a big bonus.

Yeah this is a really uncomfortable thread.

To address the people who said "this is about creating a really dark side that can be the villains," well...that's not what's happening here. It's just puns, completely dissociated from actual historical context. Which reinforces the idea that you can have Nazis without the awful things they did, which is a problem in a time when people are already trying to "soften" the Nazis' image by associating it with "dapperness", or by calling concentration camps "Holocaust centers", or by saying you can somehow have white nationalism without white supremacy (you can't, FYI).

The joke isn't worth being part of that trend.

What historical context? We're talking about Erfworld here. And isn't everything signamantic just puns?

I try and read your comment but I just tune out. It seems to me that you have a probably take National Socialists too seriously, and you don't want to see 'em portrayed as anything but monster.
You've got to remember that National Socialists are fun. They're like Vikings, Pirates, and Attila the Hun. All rolled into one!

But seriously, we don't need "Everything bad the Nazis did" every time they are brought up. It looks like you're moralizing and taking sides.
We've already been spending half the most recent update thread with people arguing back and forth whatever political messages a light-hearted comic-strip is. Kinda ruins the fun of it. Signamantic references and puns are neat and all, but they aren't the be-all and end-all of characterisation. I see this thread as an communal act of world-building.

I guess I might be a wee bit funny since my first exposure to National Socialists were the British Sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!, and Battlefield 1942: A game who's campaign was just multiplayer levels with bots in them.

Anyways. I take it you've never watched Allo Allo?

Speaking of Not-Z Warriors, I just found out that "Gramma" (sic) as in "Gramma Not-Z" is totally a saiyan name*.

I'd imagine that old Gramma Not-Z on Erfworld is pretty darned thick-skinned, with an orange-ish perplexion.

I don't have clear-cut feelings on humor lampooning the villains of our history as puns or comedy. I think it has a place, and I'd hardly say that the place can't be on a comedy website that already makes fun of a great deal of real world symbolism.

But Nazism is an awful thing, and I certainly hope you agree. Not everybody thinks you can make humor out of Nazism, and the stuff you can (or could) see at 4chan, Stormfront, and various subreddits suggests that those are murky waters. We clearly do need to moralize and bring up the horrors of Nazism whenever somebody might seek to make light of it. We need to be transparently opposed to it, and willing to acknowledge the atrocities so that the knowledge is easily communicated. We can't count on everybody on the internet to have been properly educated on all of the terrible things out there by their parents.
